Tibby Edwards
Tibby Edwards (born March 29, 1935 in Garland , Louisiana , as Edwin Thibodeaux , † October 21, 1999 in Baton Rouge , Louisiana) was an American country musician . Edwards was best known for his appearances at KWKH Louisiana Hayride .
Life
Childhood and youth
Edwards traveled extensively in Louisiana and West Texas with his father, a migrant worker . In Louisiana he was influenced by the Cajun sounds prevalent there . He learned to play the guitar early and listened to his idols Roy Acuff , Hank Williams and Lefty Frizzell .
Career
Edwards met Frizzell in 1949 and they both quickly became friends. Frizzell began promoting Edwards and I took him on tour. In 1952 Edwards was given the opportunity to become a permanent member of the Louisiana Hayride, with which he stayed a total of five years. In 1953 he signed a recording deal with Mercury Records , but never landed a hit in his entire time with the label until 1958. He built his popularity mainly on his appearances in the Hayride. Behind the stage, Edwards met the young Elvis Presley in 1955 , who had a lasting influence on him. Inspired by Presley, Edwards recorded Flip Flop & Fly and Play It Cool Man in the same year . Even if the songs with fiddle and steel guitar were still deeply rooted in traditional country music, these tracks are still popular collector's items among rockabilly fans. In 1957, however, Edwards was drafted into the military , so he had to interrupt his career .
After his discharge from the army Edwards tried to gain a foothold in the music business again, but did not succeed. His career was over, despite a few singles with various small labels. He moved to Baton Rouge, where he worked as an upholsterer until he retired.
Tibby Edwards died in Baton Rouge in 1999. In 2007 the Bear Family Records released the CD Play It Cool Man, Play It Cool with his collected works.
