Tiberius Claudius Candidus was a Roman knight, politician, and senator of the late 2nd century AD
Life
Claudius Candidus came from Numidia and began his cursus honorum (official career) as Eques (knight) under Marcus Aurelius (161-180). He served as the auxiliary prefect of the Cohors II Civium Romanorum . Then he became Tribunus Militum ( military tribune ) of the Legio II Augusta in Britain . Around 177 he was in command of the British vexillations in the Second Marcomannic War .
From Commodus (180-192) he was raised to the rank of senator. In the second year of the four emperors (193) he fought as dux des exercitus Illyricus for Septimius Severus against Pescennius Niger . After the victory over Niger, Candidus stayed in the east with Septimius Severus and took part in the successful expeditio Parthica , the war against the Parthians , in 195 . In the course of the campaign, the Adiabene and Osrhoene dominions came under Roman control.
In 195 or 196, Candidus was awarded the suffect consulate .
In the civil war (196-197) against Clodius Albinus , Candidus was also successful. From 197 to 199 Claudius Candidus legatus Augustorum pro praetore provinciae Hispaniae citerioris (governor of the province of Hispania Citerior ) and went with the Legio VII Gemina "on land and water" (terra marique) against the declared public enemy Lucius Novius Rufus, governor the Tarraconensis , who was a follower of Clodius Albinus. Then he fell out of favor with Septimius Severus. The rest of Candidus' life has not been passed on.
