The Tiekel River is a right tributary of the Copper River in southern Alaska .
The Tiekel River arises in the Chugach Mountains at the confluence of its two headwaters, Ernestine Creek and Mosquito Creek . In the upper reaches it flows 25 km initially in a south-westerly direction, later in a southerly direction. The Richardson Highway ( Alaska Route 4 ) follows it along this section of the river . At the confluence of the Tsina River coming from the west, the Tiekel River turns to the east and after a total of 55 km reaches the lower reaches of the Copper River, which flows south. The Tiekel River has several glacier-fed tributaries.
On the Richardson Highway (mi. 56), Tiekel River Lodge is on the right bank of the river. The Tiekel River is ideal for recreational activities such as kayaking or rafting .
There are initial plans to expand hydropower on the Tiekel River. The lower course of the river would be dammed above its mouth by a dam about 180 m high. The associated hydropower plant would have a planned capacity of 350 MW.
