Tiemen Brouwer (born December 19, 1916 in Ellecom , Gelderland province , † April 18, 1977 in Leiderdorp , Zuid-Holland province ) was a Dutch municipal civil servant , functionary and politician of the Katholieke Volkspartij (KVP), who between 1951 and 1966 was general secretary of the Catholic Farmers and Gardeners Association KNBTB and was a member of the Second Chamber of the States General for 14 years . He was also a member of the European Parliament from 1967 to 1973 and briefly served as Minister for Agriculture and Fisheries in 1973 in the cabinet of Prime Minister Joop den Uyl .

Life

Brouwer, the son of a farmer, began training as a municipal civil servant at the Huissen municipal administration after attending school in 1934 , where he last worked as the municipal secretary between 1950 and June 1951. During this time, he graduated from high school in 1945 and then began studying public law in the Netherlands at the Katholieke Universiteit Nijmegen , which he graduated in 1950.

On June 19, 1951 Brouwer left the Huissen municipal administration and moved to the Dutch Catholic Farmers and Gardeners Association (Katholieke Nederlandse Boeren- en Tuindersbond) as general secretary and held this position for 15 years until June 1966.

At the same time, he began his political career at the Katholieke Volkspartij (KVP) and was temporarily chairman of the Huissen branch and between 1956 and 1967 a member of the KVP party executive. On March 20, 1959, he was elected for the first time as a member of the Second Chamber of the States General for the KVP and belonged to it until May 11, 1973. During this time he was from June 1962 to December 22, 1963 first Second Secretary and then between December 22, 1963 and September 21, 1971 Secretary and Treasurer of the CIP parliamentary group in the Second Chamber of the States General. As an association functionary for farmers and gardeners, he was one of the representatives of the so-called “Green Front” (Groene Front”) within the CIP group.

Brouwer, who became an officer of the Order of Orange-Nassau on April 27, 1962 , was also a member of the parliament ( Provinciale Staten ) of the province of Zuid-Holland from June 2, 1966 to June 3, 1970, and as a representative of the States General between the 8th May 1967 and May 11, 1973 Member of the European Parliament. On April 29, 1970 he was also awarded the Knight's Cross of the Order of the Dutch Lion .

On May 11, 1973, Prime Minister Joop den Uyl appointed him Minister for Agriculture and Fisheries (Minister van Landbouw en Visserij) in his cabinet. However, he had to leave this ministerial office on November 1, 1973 for health reasons and was replaced by his party friend and previous State Secretary in the Ministry of Finance, Fons van der Stee . A fortnight later, on November 15, 1973, he was also appointed Commander of the Order of the Dutch Lions.
