Veterinarians Without Borders eV / Vétérinaires sans Frontières Germany is a non-profit association based in Berlin , which is active in veterinary emergency and disaster relief , humanitarian aid and development cooperation. At the center of the work are the people whose livelihoods depend on the keeping of animals (especially pastoralists ) and the aim of improving their living situation. Because healthy animals not only have a high cultural value for them, but also mean very practical food security and the opportunity to earn an income.

Principles according to self-description

According to its own statements, the association works independently and impartially. According to the company's own statements, the work is free of political or religious influences; it benefits people regardless of their origin, age or gender. Dealing with the culture and tradition of the people is respectful, because Veterinarians without borders allow their experience and life strategies to flow into the projects. In order to strengthen civil society on site, the people affected are included in project planning, implementation and evaluation wherever possible. The aim of Veterinarians Without Borders is to build up permanent, sustainable structures and to enable those involved to continue the projects independently after their completion. All aspects and effects of a project should be taken into account. The association sees the way of life of the pastoral nomads (people who live from animal husbandry) as a whole and therefore works in interdisciplinary teams and in cooperation with partner organizations to also cover non-veterinary areas. In addition to veterinary care and disease control, Vets Without Borders are also active in the areas of Water, Sanitation and Hygiene ( WaSH ), One Health and in the fight against neglected tropical diseases (NTDs). In East Africa, Veterinarians Without Borders are known under the name Vétérinaires sans Frontières Germany.

Organization development

The association was founded in 1991 as a student volunteer initiative at the University of Veterinary Medicine in Hanover . The federal office was located there until it was relocated to Berlin in 2014. The organization has developed very dynamically since the beginning, so that today the association is active with 289 mostly local full-time employees in Sudan , Kenya , Somalia , Ethiopia and South Sudan . The East Africa regional office in Nairobi coordinates the implementation of the projects. In Germany, the association has more than 400 members and sponsoring members and is committed to informing the German public about the situation of animal keepers in East Africa. In 2018 the association had an income of 14 million euros.

aims

Work in Sudan began in 1998. Today the association is also active in Kenya , Somalia , Ethiopia and South Sudan . The target group of the activities are nomadic or semi-nomadic ethnic groups, people whose livelihood depends on the keeping of animals. Together with the local people, the association sets up basic animal health systems in which locals are trained to become animal health workers via a multi-level training system. They can then act independently and independently in their community and are also sensitized to the early detection of animal diseases . Since the animal health workers are chosen by the communities themselves, they meet with a high level of acceptance. In addition to accompanying activities, such as the construction of water points or slaughterhouses, other income-generating measures such as beekeeping or oil production take place. In Sudan, conflict management also plays a major role in the association's work. The veterinary work has proven itself to be an excellent door opener for peace talks between hostile ethnic groups.

But adults - mainly those who work in veterinary medicine - also belong to the target group of the activities in Germany. Since 2008, Veterinarians Without Borders has also been an official partner of World Rabies Day, which is organized annually by the Global Alliance for Rabies Control . Veterinarians Without Borders has been a member of the coordination committee for humanitarian aid of the German Foreign Office (KANK) since 2018 .

The projects are primarily financed with funds from the European Union ( European Office for Humanitarian Aid and Disaster Protection (ECHO)), USAID , the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA), the Federal Foreign Office and church donors and private donations .
