history

Goat enclosure

The idea for the facility came up in 1960. The first red deer enclosure had a size of 250 m² and was founded by the Halberstadt city forester Büschel . The first resident was the red deer Hansi from the museum garden . In 1961 14 animals were already kept. In the course of time pheasants, ponies, deer and goats were added. The Halberstadt city council dealt with the question of the development of the facility and decided to expand it into a home zoo. Later, however, the decision was made to keep non-native animals in order to increase the attractiveness of the facility.

In 1972 they started keeping two rhesus monkeys . Other animal species also included donkeys, owls, foxes, lynxes, parakeets, raccoons and wolves. On May 1, 1974, the Waldschänke was opened for catering . In 1977 the zoo received a fence and lighting. Apart from a voluntary donation fund, no entrance fee was required. On May 1, 1980, a handicapped-accessible petting zoo was opened. In the 1980s, it was expanded to include more monkeys, emus, llamas, kangaroos, raccoon dogs , parrots and porcupines . Regular animal shows began.

After the political turning point in 1989 , the financing had to be reorganized. Entry fees were introduced and souvenirs and ice cream were sold. Animal sponsorships have been possible since 1992 . The animal population was expanded significantly. After guanacos , trample , meerkats, cranes, rheas , ostriches and storks were purchased in 1993 .

A handicapped accessible playground was built in 1997. In 2000 the zoo was recognized by the Deutsche Tierparkgesellschaft as an excellent zoo of the DTG and was the first to receive the prize after its introduction.

In the zoo there is an accessible Barbary ape enclosure on 1200 m² . Coatis have also been kept since 2010.
