It is also a regional association of the German Animal Welfare Association . The association runs the Berlin animal shelter and, among other things, opposes cruelty to animals .

history

When the Prussian official C. J. Gerlach witnessed the mistreatment of a carriage horse on Mühlendamm in Berlin-Mitte in 1841 , he founded the Association against Cruelty to Animals . The goal at that time was to prevent cruelty against animals with the help of all available means . On August 18, 1872, the association, which had meanwhile been renamed the Deutscher Tierschutzverein zu Berlin , was granted corporation rights by an imperial cabinet order. In the same year, the first Berlin animal shelter opened at Schulstrasse 12 in Berlin-Wedding . When the rooms were no longer sufficient, the animal asylum moved into the tram arches at the Stralauer bridge.

On June 22, 1901, the animal welfare association opened the animal shelter in Berlin-Lankwitz . In 1908 a new administration building was built at Schicklerstrasse 4, which was destroyed in the Second World War. In 2001 the property in Berlin-Lankwitz was sold. The Berlin animal shelter moved to a new location on Hausvaterweg in Berlin-Falkenberg ; the association has had its office there since September 2001.

In 2014 the Federal Association for Animal Welfare and the Animal Welfare Association for Berlin and the surrounding area merged to form the Alliance for Animal Welfare Policy Berlin. Bündnis Tierschutzpolitik Berlin, together with the German Animal Welfare Association, organizes the nationwide demonstration "Research yes - animal experiments no!" Which takes place annually in Berlin.

In addition to looking after the ownerless animals, the animal welfare association has mobilized against cruelty to animals several times and took to the streets for the rights of animals. One of his successes is the fight against subsidies for animal transport, which he has jointly led with the German Animal Welfare Association .

The animal welfare association is committed to an end to animal experiments, is committed to better keeping conditions for animals in agriculture and fights against keeping exotic animals in private households. In the capital, the association is the point of contact for questions about keeping dogs, cats and small animals.

When it was founded, the association had 90 members, in 2010 there were 15,000. The work of the association is financed through membership fees, donations and inheritances. The board includes Eva Rönspieß (deputy chairwoman), Sieglinde Stasny (treasurer), Brigitte Jenner (secretary), Claudia Hämmerling and Julia Edelmann (extended board) (as of August 2020). On July 1, 2020, journalist and television presenter Ines Krüger resigned from her position as chairperson for health reasons.

The association publishes the magazine Berliner Tierfreund and other publications on the subject of animal welfare and keeping pets.
