Harry and Platte (in the French original Tif et Tondu ) are comic characters invented and initially drawn by Fernand Dineur . He designed it for the Franco-Belgian comic magazine Spirou published by Dupuis . The series was then continued by other draftsmen and copywriters, with Will as the main draftsman of the series for over 40 years.
Release history
The early days of the series (1938–1954)
The two adventurers had been represented since the first issue of Journal de Spirou on April 21, 1938. In the first adventure Les Aventures de Tif , Platte (French: Tif ) initially acts alone, but already on the fifth page he comes across stranded Harry (French: Tondu ) on a lonely island , who does not leave him from now on. At Dineur the figures are shown very schematically. The drawings are kept simple and less detailed than among his successors, which is the only way Dineur was able to keep up his extremely high work pace. In addition, the stories are very simple and cannot be compared to the later scenarios.
Due to the imminent departure of Dineur to competing magazine Tintin , the publisher was forced to negotiate as Dineur owned the rights to the series. As a preliminary result, Will (the Belgian Willy Maltaite ) took over the series as a draftsman in 1948 , while Fernand Dineur initially continued to write the scenarios. Until 1990, Will remained loyal to the series, which under his pen developed into a classic representative of the humorous detective series, while the copywriters changed more frequently. Due to Dineur's tight specifications, the graphic development of the series suffered. Only after the final sale of Dineur's rights to Dupuis did the situation change. Among two adventures written by Luc Bermar and one written by Ben , Will was able to find his style without Dineur's guidelines.
The Rosy Era (1955–1968)
The lack of a permanent copywriter eventually led to the series' breakthrough by accident. In 1955, Maurice Rosy, more by chance, became the show's permanent copywriter for many years. Under Rosy the lively adventure series became more complex. Fantastic and enigmatic elements came to the fore, especially in the form of the masked criminal Schock. It had become clear that Harry and Platte needed a strong opponent who could compensate for the rather normal appearance of the protagonists. With the figure of shock, which was based on Fantômas , the series achieved its breakthrough, while Will's drawings now assumed their final form.
At the end of 1958, Will left Dupuis for a few years. In 1960 and 1961, Spirou magazine also tried to create adventures with Marcel Denis as a copywriter and draftsman to replace Will, but the break was too obvious so that this remained a short episode. It was not until Will returned to Dupuis in 1964 that Harry and Platte also returned, continuing to work with Rosy.
The Tillieux era (1968–1978)
In 1968 Rosy finally gave up working on the series because of various other tasks for the Dupuis publishing house. The new copywriter was Maurice Tillieux , under whom the series developed more in the direction of a semi-realistic classic detective series, although the fantastic elements were never completely abandoned. The zeitgeist of the dawning 70s was also reflected in the series. Under Tillieux, new minor characters such as the Comtesse d'Amélie and Inspector Fixshusset were also introduced.
The figure of Schock, on the other hand, does not appear, probably also because Rosy still held the rights to the figure and therefore should have given his approval. In addition, Tillieux was rather averse to the character.
The Desberg era (1978–1990)
After Tillieux's sudden accident death, Stephen Desberg became the new copywriter in 1978 , after he had already worked as an assistant in the two previous stories The Abyss of Death and The Hooded Men . The series was now also more focused on political topics, such as fascism, political agitation and organized crime. The fantastic elements have now also been emphasized more strongly.
Under Desberg, the figure of shock also returned, which was not used during the Tillieux era. In contrast to Tillieux, Desberg recognized the character's still great potential, and with the permission of Maurice Rosy, he developed the shock figure further, in order to show off his unscrupulousness and choice of (brutal) means.
The Post-Will Era (from 1990)
After being responsible for the graphic implementation of the adventures of Tif et Tondu for over 40 years, Will retired from the series in 1990 together with Desberg. The duo Alain Sikorski (drawings) and Denis Lapière (scenarios) made a total of 6 albums in the following years. But the criticism of the overly generic acts and the elimination of the graphic brackets by Will caused the series to decline in popularity. In 1997 the series was discontinued after a term of 60 years.
The three-volume prequel series Schock - The Spirits of Knightgrave , written by Stéphan Colman and drawn by Éric Maltaite (the son of Will), has been published since 2014 . This series shows in detail how a man becomes shock through the rigors of life to the vicious criminal. The continuity of the main series is maintained and the story ends just before Schock meets Harry and Platte for the first time.
Publication in Germany
In Germany, the adventures of Tif et Tondu have been known since the 1960s under the title »Gin and Fizz« through various publications by Kauka- Verlag. In 1982 and 1983 six adventures were published by Semic Verlag - also as "Gin & Fizz" - before Carlsen Verlag published 17 albums of the classic Will series between 1988 and 1994. The name established in Germany was changed to “Harry und Platte”, although the series “Gil Jourdan” (German: A case for Jeff Jordan ), also created by Maurice Tillieux, had the confusingly similar name “Harro and Platte” in earlier Kauka publications " wore.
After a break of 7 years, the comic series was continued from 2001 at Salleck Publications . A German translation of the French complete edition was published there from August 2011, starting with the albums by Will / Rosy. In this complete edition, the albums have been completely re-translated in order to bring them closer to the original and to standardize the names. At the same time, the titles of the first six stories, which were still very generic at Semic, were translated closer to the French original.
After a new complete edition was published in France beginning in 2017, which this time is completely chronological and also contains the missing material by Will, the old complete edition by Salleck has been discontinued and instead this new complete edition will be produced in France parallel to Dupuis.
The prequel series is also published in Germany by Salleck.
Characters
main characters
-
Platte (Carlsen, Salleck) / Fizz (Kauka, Semic) (orig .: Tif) At first he is the sole main character in the series, before his buddy Harry joins him very early. As his German name suggests, he is bald (but his name in the original means exactly the opposite). He is a bit more thoughtful and reserved than his friend Harry, but it is above all he who experiences the most (mostly embarrassing) mishaps, which then breaks his temper.
First appearance in Les Aventures de Tif . -
Harry (Carlsen, Salleck) / Gin (Kauka, Semic) (orig .: Tondu) It appears for the first time on the fifth page of the first episode. He is presented as the shipwrecked captain of the sunken freighter Marius . After this first meeting, he no longer leaves Plattes' side. As his German name shows, he has a full head of hair (but his name in the original says the opposite). Of the duo, it is he who is better at quickly making a plan for what to do.
First appearance in Les Aventures de Tif . -
Herr Schock (orig .: Monsieur Choc) He is the permanent rival of Harry and Platte. As the head of the worldwide criminal organization "The White Hand", he has great resources. His face is always hidden behind a white mask modeled on a knight's helmet, which is why his true existence remains a permanent mystery. After his first defeat, in addition to his plans, he is anxious to actively harm Harry and Platte.
First appearance in The White Hand ( Tif et Tondu contre la main blanche ).
Recurring supporting characters
-
Inspector Allumette (Salleck) / Inspector Zündholz (Kauka, Semic) (orig: L'inspecteur Allumette) A French police inspector. He comes into contact with Harry and Platte when he is turned off by Schock to protect them from assassins. Allumette is highly competent and Harry and Platte are usually one step ahead. Later he often supports her when Schock becomes active in France.
First appearance in The Return of Shock ( Le retour de Choc ). -
Inspector Fixchusset (orig .: L'inspecteur Fixchusset) An inspector at Scotland Yard and friend of Harry and Platte, who had to deal with shock in his career even before his friendship with Harry and Platte. He is also an excellent marksman. He supports Harry and Platte with cases taking place in and around London.
First appearance in the hunt for the invisible ( L'ombre sans corps ). -
Comtesse d'Amélie (orig .: exactly the same) She is the heiress of an initially insignificant noble residence, but with the help of Harry and Platte finds out that she is very wealthy. Later she insists on accompanying both of them on many adventures and only wants to be addressed by her nickname "Kiki" because her normal name is too long.
First appearance in The Plan of the Cobra ( Tif et Tondu contre le cobra ).
The stories
Like most of the series in Spirou magazine, Tif et Tondu's adventures were released as albums some time after Dupuis was first published. However, Fernand Dineur's early work was not taken into account. The album series only begins with the comics that were created after Will took over the series. The first adventures that were written by Dineur are also only partially included here.
The missing volumes have, however, also been published in other series in France, and in some cases also by other publishers. In the old complete edition the stories from before Rosy are completely missing, this complete edition only begins with "The White Hand" . However, a new complete edition began in 2017, which contains the first stories by Will (Willy Maltaite), which were still written by Fernand Dineur. This was the first time that these stories were shown in German. The same goes for the stories of Denis. Only the material created exclusively by Dineur will never be published, probably due to its lack of continuity.
In Germany, the publication history is - as with so many Franco-Belgian series - very confusing. Since 1982, only adventures drawn by Will have been published in album form and complete editions. These are also not yet completely available in German translation, two albums are still missing in Will's work ( "Swastika" and "Coups durs" ). His early work and the short interlude by Denis have appeared in the latest complete edition, while the work of his successors in Germany has never been published. The volumes published since 1982 are divided between three publishers (Semic, Carlsen, Salleck). The order of publication and the numbering are not chronological, which will only change with the new complete edition.
Never published in album form
All of the material produced by Dineur, even in Belgium or France, was never put into album form, probably mainly due to the material situation and the fact that the stories show almost no continuity with one another. Apart from short excerpts, they are not included in the complete editions either.
The following stories were drawn by Will but never appeared in album form, only in the original magazines and the latest complete edition:

It should be noted that in the French original the volumes "The Villa for Long Scream" and "Shock in the Louvre" have been swapped. In the logical order, "Shock in the Louvre" comes first, which can also be seen in some passages in the text. This error was never corrected for the individual albums. Only the most recent complete edition will remove the correct order.
The short stories
The series 'short stories have never been included in the series' albums, with a few exceptions. Only the new complete edition from 2017 will make these stories available outside of the original magazine publications. Since The Spirit of the Samurai is very long with 22 pages and also gave the title to the album in which it was published, this story is not included in this list.
