Tiger Coatings is an Austrian powder coating manufacturer in Wels in Upper Austria. According to chemiereport.at, the company is the sixth largest powder coating manufacturer in Europe. In addition to Austria, there are also production sites in Canada, Mexico and Vietnam, as well as two plants in the USA and three in China. The products are sold worldwide.

history

The company was founded in 1930. A paint shop turned into a production company for oil paints , dry paints , putties and thinners . The trademark was entered in the trademark register in 1934. The company has been growing steadily since the 1950s.

In the 1950s, the German scientist Erwin Gemmer developed a method for processing thermoset powder coatings. The environmentally friendly, solvent-free, innovation quickly aroused the interest of the company, which was very active in the synthetic resin paint market at the time. However, it was not until the 1960s that powder coating technology could be used with lower layer thicknesses and thus be widely used commercially, with the electrostatic processing of powder coatings and the development of special guns for spraying the product. In 1968, Tiger was one of the first manufacturers to use powder coating technology. In the meantime, 95% of sales are in powder coatings and only 5% in wet coatings.

In 1981 the company received the state award , which entitles it to use the federal coat of arms in business transactions.

At the beginning of the 1970s, global export and with it the constant internationalization of Tiger Coatings began. In the mid-1980s, Tiger Coatings established manufacturing facilities in the United States and Canada . Since the 1990s, plants have been set up in Asia and, most recently, in South America. Today the export share is over 70% of sales. In addition to expanding production, investments have also been made in research and development. For this reason, a research and development center was set up at the headquarters in Wels in 2003. In the following years, Tiger Coatings continued to expand. A plant was opened in Mexico in 2008 and in Egypt in 2010. In 2011 the second Chinese production plant followed in Chengdu , and in 2013 the third Chinese production plant in Fogang .

In 2012, the metallic production and laboratory areas in the Metallic Competence Center at the Wels location were further expanded. In addition, an investment program has been running since 2014 that provides for the expansion and conversion of production capacities by 20 million euros - also at the headquarters in Wels (Austria).

In July 2009, a case of employee surveillance from 2003 became known. The company itself describes the surveillance as a temporary measure that was initiated due to an incident threatening the existence of the company. The allegations made by the company that it was an act of revenge by former employees are vehemently denied by them. This is the first major case of employee surveillance in Austria. In this context, the company received a Big Brother Award in the Business and Finance category.

In May 2014 Tiger Coatings was voted “Best Family Company in Austria 2014”. The award was presented in a competition by the Austrian daily newspaper WirtschaftsBlatt in cooperation with Bankhaus Spängler, the Austrian Chamber of Notaries and BDO Austria. A well-known jury, including the Austrian Minister for Economic Affairs Reinhold Mitterlehner, assessed Austrian family businesses based on their economic development in recent years and based on their foundations. In addition, sustainability and value culture issues were included in the assessment.

In June 2014, the Austrian Chamber of Commerce awarded the company the "Hidden Champion 3.0" award. The reason: The international group of companies is one of the world market leaders in its niche. The criteria were: market position, turnover, innovation competence and ownership structure. Ecological and social sustainability issues were also included in the evaluation. A total of 169 Austrian companies were identified that match the criteria or that are well on their way to meeting the criteria in the near future. Of these 169 companies, 100 received the award directly from the President of the Chamber of Commerce, Christoph Leitl (including Tiger Coatings), while the 69 other companies received the award as part of an event in the respective regional chamber.
