Time Trap (alternative title for buying DVD, Blu-ray and streaming media services: The cave - the gateway to another time ) is an American low-budget science fiction - Thriller by Mark Dennis and Ben Foster from the Year 2017 .

action

Professor Hopper is looking in a cave for a hippie family that disappeared in the 1970s and whose abandoned VW bus he found in a remote desert-like landscape. Upon entering, he sees an immobile man standing behind a vertical water-like layer. He penetrates the layer and as he approaches the man, he begins to move and continues in front of him into the cave. When leaving the cave he sees the light from the entrance flashing strangely and when he reaches the entrance to the cave it is night, although he has only spent a few minutes in the cave. In addition, his car has grown over. In the VW bus he finds an old book that tells of the source of eternal youth. To solve the riddle, he goes back to the cave.

In the meantime, the group around the students Jackie and Taylor went looking for Hopper and found both the VW bus and the abandoned Hoppers car. The discovery of an old rope, which leads from the VW bus into another entrance of the cave, leads them to assume that the professor reached the cave system this way. The group rappels down on a steep drop, also crosses the water-like air barrier and soon finds themselves trapped in the cave because the ropes are cut off.

The boy Furby, left behind on the surface, waits several days for his friends to return, finds the old book and is finally forced to climb into the cave at another point. When trying, he falls into a deep shaft and remains lying there without any signs of life.

When searching the cave, the group has also reached this point and finds Furby, who is obviously dead. Based on Furby's video recordings, the group recognizes that something is wrong with the time and that the change of light at the entrance must have something to do with the change from day to night.

Since the best climbers got injured, Cara decides to climb up through the shaft to get help with the help of a GPS emergency signal generator. When she finally comes to the surface, the landscape is completely different and she is on a mountain in the middle of a rocky desert. The GPS receiver does not receive a signal and she discovers a large triangular space station in the sky. After about half an hour, she desperately climbs back down the shaft to meet her friends. When she gets there, however, her friends are very upset because she had only been gone a second after seeing them. When comparing them with the video recordings of Cara and those who stayed behind, they realize that they are stuck in a time bubble in which time runs very slowly. To their horror, they also realize that the change of light in the sky is not the change of day, but the change of year. Upon closer analysis of Furby's video, they also see that Furby initially survived the crash and was found and attacked by an unknown being.

The group decides to go deeper into the cave. There she meets a group of aggressive cavemen whose attacks she has little to oppose, which forces her to retreat again. Back at the shaft, the light has changed and a tall spaceman can now enter the cave via a futuristic ladder. Unclear whether this is a friend or an enemy, the group experiences how the spaceman can struggle to defend himself against the attacks of the cavemen. But with his help they discover that healing takes place in a water basin - they have found the fountain of eternal youth . Nearby they also find the lifeless bodies of the missing hippie family and the seriously injured professor.

In an even slower time bubble they discover fighting Spaniards and indigenous people, but do not want to intervene there.

In the final fight with other cave dwellers, the group tries to escape via the ladder. They discover that instead of the cave exit, a physical water barrier now covers the exit. Just as Cara reaches this barrier, a caveman turns off the ladder and they fall down. Only Cara is saved by the hand of an alien being. From this side of the time bubble, the remaining group members appear to be in the air and are rescued by the aliens by special ropes, as is the professor and the hippies who turn out to be his parents and sister. They are in a spaceship high above the earth, there Furby comes to life again, and the group flies from the earth past the moon into space.

reception

The film Time Trap received by adult reviews. On the Web site Rotten Tomatoes , the film reached at a total of eight reviews of the reviewers a score of 63 percentage points.

TV-Today writes under the title “Sci-Fi-Thriller about old puzzles. Produced cheaply, but no trash ”:“ Despite an apparently tight budget, the indie film entertains with handsome effects and a pretty mysterious story. Towards the end, however, it hits two or three volts too much without bothering with the urgently needed explanations. So you are left disappointed and at a loss, as if you had seen the pilot of a series that was never realized ”.
