Timoteus Pokora

Timoteus Pokora (born June 26, 1928 in Brno , † July 11, 1985 in Prague ) was a Czech sinologist and expert on the history and philosophy of the Han dynasty .

biography

Timoteus Pokora's parents were the tax officer Pavel Pokora and Vlastimila Pokora (née Kyprová). 1938–1946 he went to school in Kroměříž , showed great interest in foreign languages ​​and learned English and Italian . 1946-1950 he studied in Brno Jus , but also attended lectures on philosophy and philology . He was initially interested in Turkish and Hebrew and attended courses from Václav Machek and Josef Kabrda . Under the influence of the events in China , he decided to study Sinology at Charles University in Prague with Jaroslav Průšek , focusing on ancient Chinese history and classical Chinese . Before completing his studies, he was accepted at the Oriental Institute (Orientální ústav) of the Czechoslovak Academy of Sciences ( ČSAV ) in 1954 , where he worked under Průšek on his dissertation on the Han-era philosopher Huan Tan , which he completed in 1959. He remained at the institute as a researcher and in 1963 became director of the East Asia department. 1965-1966 he taught in Heidelberg , 1969-1970 at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor . Pokora was a member of the editorial staff of the magazine Archiv orientální .

In addition to his scientific work, Pokora was interested in politics . He welcomed the democratization efforts in the second half of the 1960s and was therefore persecuted during the “ normalization ” after the crackdown on the Prague Spring . In 1973 he was forced to leave the Oriental Institute and worked as an interpreter and translator . He was forbidden from entering the Oriental Institute and its library, and he could only publish in Czechoslovak magazines under pseudonyms , so that from that time on he had to publish most of his work abroad.

Pokora primarily focused on the philosophy and history of ancient China, especially the Han Dynasty philosophers, particularly Wang Chong and Huan Tan. He was working on a translation of the "Notes of the Historiographer" ( Shiji ) by Sima Qian , which he could no longer complete.
