Tinimbang Ka Ngunit Kulang ( Tagalog , lit. about you have been weighed, but it's too little ; published worldwide under the English title Weighed But Found Wanting ) is a 1974 Filipino film by director Lino Brocka . The title is an allusion to the interpretation of the wall inscription Mene mene tekel u-parsin by the prophet Daniel in the Bible ( Dan 5,1-25  EU ). The film is considered one of the most important in Brocka's work.

action

The film begins with a flashback. In a secluded hut, the main female character Kuala (Lolita Rodriguez) has an abortion forced by Cesar Blanco (Eddie Garcia), the child's father . The abortion succeeds, but while Kuala buries the fetus under a tree, she falls into apathy . After a transition wakes Kuala but as she walks around aimlessly in the heat, she loses her mind.

After a leap in time (several years) into the present, Kuala roams through her small home village as a homeless in ragged clothes and with itchy hair. In a parked car she discovers Cesar kissing with a young woman and accuses him with a homemade wooden cross that she always carries with her. Forced to steal her food, she is mocked and attacked by the villagers. Later in the film she is picked up by Bertong "Berto" Ketong (Mario O'Hara), who is disfigured by a leprous lion face . This initially has voluptuous motifs and lures them into his house with the help of a rattle. In the further course he protects and cares for Kuala.

At the same time, the story of Junior Blanco (Christopher de León), Cesar's legitimate son, is told. This looks for orientation in the confusion of emotions of growing up. At home, he witnessed his parents' quarrels over his father's promiscuous lifestyle and his lost election as mayor. During a nightly prank together with his friends, they harass Berto and Kuala. Only Junior feels guilty after the action and later returns to apologize. After watching his girlfriend Evangeline (Hilda Koronel) flirting, he gets drunk and is seduced by Milagros (Laurice Guillen), who leaves him immediately. Dissatisfied with his father's chauvinistic answers on the subject, he finds an adviser in Berto and becomes friends with him and Kuala. Kuala disappears during a walk together. Junior and Berto find her troubled under the tree where her fetus is buried. Using the false name Cesar, she begs Berto not to kill her child.

When the pregnancy of Kuala becomes apparent, the village community under the leadership of the Asociación de las Damas Cristianas (Association of Christian Women) forces her into the care of the headmistress Lola Jacoba (Rosa Aguirre), which amounts to a prison. Junior learns of the accident and asks his father to use his political influence. He refuses, whereupon Junior helps the heavily pregnant Kuala to escape on his own. After the brief happiness of their reunion, it is clear to Berto that Kuala has to go back. He promises to take her to him after the delivery. However, he is unaware of Jacoba's plan to lock Kuala in a mental hospital in Manila.

A few days later, labor begins at night near Kuala. Panicked, she flees to Berto's hut. He asks the village doctor to help with the birth. When he refuses, Berto takes him hostage. The villagers, including Junior, are woken up by the wife's screams and they all follow the couple. The doctor breaks free and Berto is shot by the police when he is chasing him again.

Badly affected by Berto's death, Junior rushes to the hut, where Kuala has meanwhile given birth to a boy, but the blood loss during the birth was too great. In agony , her mind returns. She recognizes Cesar in the crowd and reveals his secret. She gives the baby to Junior and dies. With accusatory looks, Junior walks through the trellis of the villagers and leaves the scene.

background

Filming location Villa Epifania

The film was the first production of the production company Cinemanila founded by Brocka. He himself referred to the film as his "first novel" to express that the main character has strong autobiographical references. The father's role shows striking parallels to his own father, Regino Brocka, who was also politically active and promiscuous . The religious motifs in the film are influenced by his missionary work on Molokai . The little side episode of the gay teacher that the youngsters make fun of could also be Brocka's experience.

The Blancos' house is Villa Epifania in Santa Rita .
