The UK Antarctic Place-Names Committee named it in 2004 after the Norwegian factory ship Tioga , built in 1890 , which operated for whaling in the waters around the South Orkney Islands between 1911 and 1912 and sank in a storm near Port Jebsen on February 4, 1913.
