The Tyrolean State Archive (TLA) is a public archive of the state of Tyrol and is located in Innsbruck . It forms a department of the office of the Tyrolean provincial government. The inventory comprises over 30,000 linear meters of archival material, which originated from the entire former Crown Land of Tyrol and therefore, in addition to the current state of Tyrol, also relates to South Tyrol and Trentino as well as the former Habsburg foreland . The Tiroler Landesarchiv also conducts basic archival and historical research and publishes the results in its publication series “Tiroler Geschichtsquellen” and “Publications of the Tiroler Landesarchiv”.

History of the archive

Strictly speaking, the Tyrolean State Archive consists of two separate archives, the so-called State Government Archive, whose holdings go back to the 11th century, and the Landscape Archive , the archive of the Tyrolean State Parliament . The government archive has been renamed several times. From 1523 on it was called the Upper Austrian Treasury Archive , from 1763 Gubernial Archive , from 1850 Lieutenancy Archive , 1919–1939 and 1945–1972 Provincial Government Archive for Tyrol , and between 1939 and 1945 Reichsgau Archive . It has had its current name since 1972. The landscape archive was first mentioned in 1502.
