Thiruvanmiyur ( Tamil : திருவான்மியூர் Tiruvāṉmiyūr [ ˈt̪iɾɯˌʋaːnmijuːr ], also Tiruvanmiyur ) is a district of Chennai (Madras), the capital of the Indian state of Tamil Nadu .

Thiruvanmiyur is located in the south of Chennai around 12 kilometers south of the city center. Administratively, Thiruvanmiyur belongs to the Adyar Zone . The boundaries of the district are not precisely defined, but Thiruvanmiyur can be delimited from Besant Nagar and Adyar in the north and Kottivakkam in the south. In the west, the Buckingham Canal forms the border with the Tharamani district , in the east lies the coast of the Bay of Bengal .

The history of Thiruvanmiyur goes back further than the Chennais, which were only founded as a British colony in the 17th century. The district is home to an important old Hindu temple, the Marundeeswarar Temple , which is dedicated to the god Shiva . The sanctuary was already in the 7./8. Century sung in the Tevaram hymns of the poet saints Appar and Sundarar . Thiruvanmiyur is one of the 274 holy places of Tamil Shaivism ( Padal Petra Sthalams ). In its present form, the temple dates back to the 11th century. According to legend, the seer Valmiki , the mythical author of the Ramayana , worshiped Shiva here. The name Thiruvanmiyur , which originally was Thiruvalmikiyur , "holy ( thiru ) place ( ur ) of Valmiki", is said to derive from Valmiki.

Thiruvanmiyur is the starting point of the East Coast Road (ECR), which runs parallel to the coast via Mamallapuram and Puducherry to Cuddalore . The district is connected to the city center via the Thiruvanmiyur station of the MRTS elevated railway . The campus of the Kalakshetra Foundation is located in Thiruvanmiyur , which is known for its artistic training, especially in the classic South Indian dance style Bharata Natyam .
