Systematics

Originally, T. exstinctus was believed to be a close relative of Tityus trinitatis Pocock, 1897 (from Trinidad and Tobago). However, a later study revealed that this taxon is more closely related to Tityus pictus and Tityus smithii .

Before the first scientific description by Wilson Lourenço in 1995, three experts examined the holotype, which is kept in the Muséum national d'histoire naturelle . In 1890 Eugène Simon synonymized this species with Centrurus insulanus . Embrik Strand (no date known) mentioned this scorpion as Scorpio marmoratus . Karl Kraepelin was the first in 1900 to identify it as a new and undescribed species within the genus Tityus .
