The Sierra Negra volcano (other names: Cerro La Negra, Atlitzin or Tliltépetl ) is an extinct volcano in the Mexican state of Puebla , near the border with Veracruz . At 4580 m, it is the fifth highest mountain in Mexico. Due to its proximity to the much higher Pico de Orizaba (5610 m), however, the Sierra Negra was often not taken into account in hiking guides or even by the Mexican authorities until the Large Millimeter Telescope was built on its summit.

location

The Sierra Negra is only about 6 kilometers (as the crow flies) from the highest mountain in Mexico, the Pico de Orizaba or Citlaltépetl. Both mountains together form a national park established in 1937. The closest city, Ciudad Serdán , is about 12 kilometers to the west.

geology

For a long time the mountain, which was mostly covered in snow, was ignored because it was believed to be a secondary peak geologically connected to the Pico de Orizaba. It was not until the end of the 20th century that the different geological structures of the two mountains became apparent. The Sierra Negra is now considered to be much older than the Pico de Orizaba.

Others

The establishment on the summit of the Sierra Negra

The Large Millimeter Telescope, completed in 2006 and operated by Mexican and American universities, rises on the summit of the Sierra Negra . Another solar telescope is already there; the construction of further astronomical instruments is planned.

The High Altitude Water Cherenkov Experiment (HAWC) is located in close proximity to the Sierra Negra .
