Ciudad Serdán is a city at 2526 m above sea level. d. M. in the highlands of Mexico . It was not until 1930 that the city, formerly called San Andrés Chalchicomula , was renamed in honor of Aquiles Serdán , one of the leaders killed in 1910 on the part of Francisco Madero in the fight against the re-election of the dictatorial president Porfirio Díaz . Ciudad Serdán is the capital of the Municipios Chalchicomula de Sesma .
location
Ciudad Serdán is only about 20 km (as the crow flies) in a westerly direction from Pico de Orizaba , the highest mountain in Mexico. The city is located about 15 km north of today's main road between Mexico City and Puebla to the port city of Veracruz .
history
Probably there was already a settlement of Chichimec and Tlaxcaltek population groups in pre-Hispanic times . Among the Spanish colonizers, the area was known as the granary and as a stopover on the way from the capital to the port of Veracruz. There was also a collection point for the indigenous donations in kind.
On March 6, 1862, as part of the French intervention in Mexico, there was a huge explosion of the powder depot of the French expeditionary force quartered in San Andrés Chalchicomula, killing more than 1,000 members of the army and several hundred civilians.
On August 28, 1973, below the city was the epicenter for the severe earthquake in Veracruz with a magnitude of 8.7 on the Richter scale , in which probably more than 1000 people lost their lives; others suffered injuries and many people lost their homes and belongings.
Attractions
- The parish church dedicated to the Apostle Andrew ( Parroquia San Andrés Apóstol ) is a single-nave church from the 19th century, richly decorated in neo-renaissance and neo-baroque style. Of its two-tower west facade, only the left tower is completely high; Both lower levels of the tower are - as usual in Spanish colonial architecture - completely unadorned. The semicircular gable field shows three angel figures and simple paintings.
- In front of the church is the town's main square ( Plaza Mayor ) with its central music pavilion and a fountain.
