To the People of the United States is an American short - documentary by Arthur Lubin from the year 1943. The film was commissioned by the United States Public Health Service and should US soldiers before syphilis warn.

content

The film begins with a Boeing B-17 crew on the ground whose squadron cannot take off because the pilot is sick. The image transitions to the rear view of a soldier who tells a doctor that he feels guilty about being infected. The doctor assures him that he will be able to fly again. But the soldier has heard rumors that his career as a pilot is over. The doctor tries to allay the man's concerns by asserting that his infection could have been stopped soon enough.

After the pilot has left the room, the doctor speaks directly to the audience. First, he explains the spread of syphilis in the United States. In a US Army hospital, the viewer is informed that syphilis is spreading like a bush fire and that neither a foreign organization nor sabotage would cause more lost work than the disease.

The doctor now reports on the social stigma associated with syphilis, and suspects that this is the main reason that people have so rarely had their blood tested for the pathogen. In Scandinavia, however, the home of the doctor, people are much more open and it is normal to have your blood tested regularly. He then uses a diagram to show that in Norway , Sweden and Denmark , compared to New York, syphilis is far less common. The film ends with an appeal to be tested.
