Tobias Kühne (born May 2, 1977 in Hanover ) is a former German rower .

Career

Kühne got into rowing in 1989 through the rowing club of the Bismarck School in Hanover . He is still a member there today. Since then he has achieved a number of national and international successes for his future home club, the Hanoverian Rowing Club of 1880 , which he joined in 1996 at the start of his competitive sports career. Among other things, he was a six-time German champion and won various medals at rowing world cups and world championships .

He represented the German Rowing Association in the national team at international regattas and rowing world championships , initially in the period from 1996 to 2003 with his club mate Jan Westphalen in various boat classes. Among other things, both became student world champions in two-man without a helmsman in 2002 . His greatest success was reaching the Olympic final in two without a helmsman with his new partner Jan Herzog from Berlin at the 2004 Summer Olympics in Athens, after they surprisingly won the semifinals and were close to medals in the final for a long time. In the end it was enough for a 6th place. Nationally, Kühne and Herzog remained undefeated throughout the year. The coach of this pairing was Bernd Landvoigt from Potsdam.

Four years earlier, Kühne narrowly missed participation in the 2000 Summer Olympics in Sydney after the Germany eighth did not qualify and thus only six German oars in Australia took part in two and four. He also narrowly missed the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing after he ended his international career at the beginning of the 2008 season due to differences with the then national coach Dieter Grahn . During his active time, Kühne mostly competed in two-without at national and international regattas, but also rowed several times in Germany eight, but never to the target competitions.

Kühne is still rowing for the Hanoverian Rowing Club from 1880 in the Rowing League . In 2006 he took a year off from active competitive sports to finish his first state examination in law. This year he trained Elke Hipler and Christina Hennings as exercise bikes in Hanover. Both were able to win medals in two-without and eight at the World Championships this year .

Kühne was also a member of the jury for the Stars of Sports at state level for several years . Since 2009 he has been the honorary director of the Federal Training Center in Hanover.
