Tobias Koy (* 1757 in Vienna (Bécs); † July 3, 1809 in Buda ) was a Hungarian court official in Buda and an entomologist of Austrian descent.

life and work

Koy grew up in Vienna. In 1787 he came to Buda as a Hungarian treasurer . In his spare time he collected insects in the Budapest area and reported on his collections in two articles. Koy's butterfly collection is of historical importance and is kept in the Hungarian Museum of Natural History.

On March 1, 1798, for more “formal” reasons (probably to promote scientific contacts), Koy was accepted into the German Academy of Natural Scientists Leopoldina together with the court official Mauritius Johann Böhm with matriculation number 1005 and the academic nickname “Aelianus IV.” .
