Tobias Picker (born July 18, 1954 in New York City ) is an American composer .

life and work

Picker began composing at the age of eight. His work includes compositions of all genres. His work includes five operas , three symphonies , three piano concertos , concerts for violin , viola and oboe , various songs , string quartets and chamber music . He also recorded his piano piece "Keys of the City" with Ursula Oppens .

Picker was recognized by the Wall Street Journal as "America's best composer of lyrical stage works" and by BBC Music Magazine as a representative of a "decidedly inspired style that is one of the highlights of the current music scene". He has had Tourette's syndrome for a long time .

Honourings and prices

By the time he was 30, he had received a large number of awards and accolades, including the BMI Student Composer Awards , Columbia University's Bearns Pirze , the Charles Ives Fellowship, and a Guggenheim Foundation Fellowship . In 1992 he was awarded the music prize of the American Academy of Arts and Letters , of which he has been a member since 2012.
