Tohru Fukuyama (2016)

Life

Fukuyama studied chemistry at Nagoya University with the degrees of Bachelor (1971) and Master (1973). As a graduate student he was then at Harvard University worked and was there in 1977 as an academic student of Yoshito Kishi with the work The total synthesis of gliotoxin doctorate . He continued his research as a postdoc in the Department of Chemistry at Harvard University until 1978 and then moved to Rice University as an assistant professor , where he became a professor in 1988 . In 1995 he followed a call to a chair in pharmaceutical sciences at the University of Tokyo , Japan. Fukuyama has been a professor - or more precisely: Designated Professor of Pharmaceutical Sciences - at Nagoya University since 2013.

The aim of Tohru Fukuyama's research is to produce complex natural substances in a totally synthetic manner. The Fukuyama amine synthesis , Fukuyama indole synthesis and Fukuyama reduction are name reactions in organic chemistry , which are named after their discoverer Tohru Fukuyama.
