Toivo Tulev (born July 18, 1958 in Tallinn ) is an Estonian composer .

Study and job

Toivo Tulev graduated from Tallinn Conservatory in 1990 with Eino Tamberg . In 1991 he studied with Sven-David Sandström at the Royal Academy of Music in Stockholm and in 1996 at the University of Music and Dance in Cologne . Since autumn 2005 Tulev has headed the composition department at the Estonian Academy of Music and Drama in Tallinn . Since 1992 he has been a member of the Estonian Composers' Union ( Eesti Heliloojate Liit ).

Compositional work (selection)

Toivo Tulev's compositions are strongly influenced by early music and Gregorian influences . The expressionistic and sacred sound are essential features of his sound creations.

Awards

In 2001 and 2003 Tulev received the annual composition award from the Estonian state foundation Eesti Kultuurkapital . In 2006 he was awarded the annual prize of the Estonian Music Council ( Eesti Muusikanõukogu aastapreemia ).

Private life

Toivo Tulev has been working with the Estonian music therapist Juta Tulev, b. Lagus (* 1956) married. The couple have five children.
