description
The Tolbooth is at the head of the High Street ( A709 ) in the center of Lochmaben. The building was completed in 1723. It originally closed with a dome, which was demolished in 1741 in favor of the current bell tower. In 1867 the Tolbooth was redesigned based on a design by David Bryce .
The red sandstone masonry is rusticated on the base along the south-facing front . This is three axes wide and is dominated by the central bell tower, which closes with an octagonal helmet. Above the arched portal at the foot there is a Venetian window , the middle window of which is worked as a niche with a statue. Elongated lattice windows are framed by round arches on both sides of the portal . The facade closes with a stone balustrade with lion sculptures.
Further Venetian windows can be found on the two side facades. Their leaded glass windows show representations of Robert the Bruce and William Wallace . The building closes with a slate-covered gable roof , which has eagle sculptures on the gables.
