from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Tomáš Čep (born September 3, 1886 in Želechovice , † October 17, 1959 in the fortress Leopoldov ) was a Czechoslovak sociologist and university professor and participant in the Czechoslovak resistance movement in the Protectorate of Bohemia and Moravia . In communist Czechoslovakia he was arrested, tried in a show trial and died in the fortress Leopoldov prison.

Life

After graduating from high school in Frýdek-Místek , Tomáš Čep studied philosophy and bohemian studies at the Charles University in Prague. In 1915 he obtained the PhDr degree and was a professor at various technical and secondary schools in Moravské Budějovice , Ostrava and Brno . In 1935 he completed his habilitation (focus: sociology of rural areas) and lectured at the Mendel University in Brno (formerly University of Agriculture). He was a member of the editorial board of Sociologická revue (Sociological Review), Československá akademie zemědělská (Czechoslovak Agricultural Academy) and Masarykova sociologická společnost (Masaryk's Sociological Society).

After the outbreak of war and the establishment of the Protectorate, he took part in the resistance in a civilian department of the Obrana národa resistance group . Čep was arrested and was in custody from 1940 to 1945. He then taught again at Mendel University, where he was appointed full professor in 1947. In 1951 he was arrested and sentenced to several years in prison in a show trial of former members of the Českoslovanská strana agrární (Agrarian Party), although after the end of the war he joined the left-wing ruling party Československá strana národně sociální (then the Czechoslovak National Socialist Party ). Tomáš Čep died as a result of the harsh conditions in prison.

Tomáš Čep was married to Marie Čepová (1891–1979).

Čep as a sociologist

The importance of Tomáš Čep for Czech sociology lies primarily in the fact that he established and institutionalized the subject "Sociology of Rural Areas" at the then University of Agriculture in Brno (today Mendel University) in the mid-1930s. However, the subject was not continued after his political dismissal. From a journalistic point of view, his numerous contributions to the Sociological Review and other specialist journals deserve special mention.
