Tomáš Jan Podivínský (born November 21, 1969 in Wischau ) is a Czech politician and diplomat .

Life

He studied at the University of Brno and then from 1988 to 1992 journalism at the Faculty of Social Sciences at Charles University in Prague . From 1985 he worked as a journalist for various newspapers and magazines. In 1989/1990 he was a member of the central student strike committee. In 1992 he worked for the Rovnost newspaper. This was followed by work related to German-speaking countries. From 1993 to 1995 he worked as export manager of the Prague air conditioning company Janka. The focus of business relations was in Germany .

In 1996 he entered the service of the Czech Ministry of Foreign Affairs. He initially worked as an advisor to the chief director of the economic and information department. From 1997 he worked at the Czech Embassy in Austria in Vienna as Secretary of the Commercial Department, where he was particularly concerned with matters relating to the Temelín nuclear power plant . In 1999 he became chief of protocol at the embassy, ​​and in 2000 he took over the function of press spokesman for the embassy and personal secretary of ambassador Jiří Gruša . In 2003 he returned to the Czech Republic and was Director of the Cabinet of the Foreign Minister and Parliamentary Secretary until 2005. In 2004 he also studied at the Diplomatic Academy in Prague. In 2005 he went to Dresden as Consul General . He held the office until 2009.

In 2010 he worked at the Diplomatic Academy in Prague, in 2011 he was managing director and partner of the consulting company Synco Europe based in Prague. From 2011 he was active in the environmental sector and deputy head of a state environmental fund. In 2012 he became Deputy Minister of the Environment until he took over the post of Czech Environment Minister in the Jiří Rusnok government from July 10, 2013 to January 29, 2014 .

At the same time, he was a member of the Chamber of Deputies of the Parliament of the Czech Republic from October 26, 2013 to December 8, 2014 and was a member of the Christian and Democratic Union - Czechoslovak People's Party , for which he was elected to parliament. He was a member of the Environment Committee from February to May 2014 and then the Economic Committee. He was also a member of the election committee, of which he was temporarily deputy chairman. He belonged to the inter-parliamentary groups with Armenia and Israel .

On January 8, 2015, he was accredited as the Czech ambassador to Germany. In 2019 he was the first Czech ambassador to speak on a day of the Sudeten Germans .

Podivínský is a member of the Czech-Israeli Chamber of Commerce.

Personal

Tomáš Jan Podivínský is married and has two children. He speaks Czech , German , English and Russian . He is also a member of the Rotary Club .
