YouTube

Own channel

Tom Scott operates a YouTube channel, which to date (as of August 2020) has been subscribed to by 2.97 million people and whose videos have received over 646 million views. In addition to older recordings and guest videos from other producers, he publishes videos there on the topics of “Things you might not know”, “Amazing Places”, “Built for Science” and the series “Tom's Language Files”, in which he explains various aspects of linguistics.

Typical videos by Tom Scott are characterized by their brevity (usually less than 5 minutes) and conciseness. Scott usually speaks by heart from script, which he reproduces on site and not infrequently in unusual situations, such as in a centrifuge or in weightlessness during a parabolic flight .

Productions by his group "The Technical Difficulties", consisting of Scott, audio engineer Matt Gray, ornithologist Chris Joel and archivist Gary Brannan, are also uploaded to Scott's own channel. This includes the game show "Citation Needed".

In 2018 Tom Scott founded the production company "Pad 26 Limited" based in Worthing for his videos .

On April 9, 2020, Tom Scott posted a video with the view number in the title. The title is automatically updated repeatedly using a small script program . With 20 million views (as of August 2020), it is the most viewed video on his YouTube channel.

Matt and Tom

Together with Matt Gray, Scott runs the “Matt and Tom” channel. The video series “The Park Bench” appeared there until 2018, regarding the background to videos from Scott's channel, and since 2019 the game show “Two Of These People Are Lying” by Technical Difficulties .

Computer philosopher

Tom Scott made several guest appearances on the YouTube channel Computerphile, in which he explained technical aspects of internet security.

British General Election 2010

In 2010 Tom Scott ran, as before in the role of "Mad Capt'n Tom", as a joke candidate for the general election of the United Kingdom . Since he had no intentions to actually hold political office, but merely cashed in a losing bet, he chose the constituency of Cities Of London & Westminster for his candidacy. The seat there has been in conservative hands for decades . Scott received 84 votes (0.2 percent), including the voice of Noel Gallagher , the guitarist for the band Oasis .
