Life

Tomaso Montanari attended the Liceo ginnasio Dante in Florence. He studied with Paola Barocchi at the Scuola Normale Superiore di Pisa , where he wrote the thesis Le collezioni romane di Cristina di Svezia e del cardinal Decio Azzolino in 1994 and received his doctorate in 1998 with the dissertation Alle origini della storiografia berniniana . He then worked at the Università degli Studi della Tuscia in Viterbo until 2004 and was then employed as an assistant professor at the Università di Roma Tor Vergata until 2008 . He then moved to the University of Naples Federico II , where he was appointed full professor of art history in 2015. In 2018 he moved to the University for Foreigners in Siena . He still lives in the Pignone district in Florence.

In his writings, Montanari opposes the privatization and commercialization of art and the misconception that art can stimulate the Italian economy without the works of art being damaged by the constant transports to exhibitions, and pleads for a slowing down of the perception of art. It was Montanari who publicized Marino Massimo De Caro's book theft in the Biblioteca dei Girolamini in spring 2012 with an article in Il Fatto Quotidiano .

Montanari received the Order of Merit of the Italian Republic in 2013 .
