The Tombea saxifrage ( Saxifraga tombeanensis ) is a species in the genus saxifrage ( Saxifraga ) in the family Saxifragaceae (Saxifragaceae). It got its name from the site of Monte Tombea in the Judiciary Alps.
features
The tombea saxifrage is a perennial plant that reaches heights of 5 to 12 centimeters. It grows in firm cushions and forms numerous columnar, non-flowering shoots that are densely leafed like roof tiles. The basal sheets are elongated-ovate , lanceolate to diamond-shaped, 2 to 4 millimeters long and 1 to 2 millimeters wide. The tip of the spine is bent inwards, the edge is ciliated. There are 3 to 5 dimples on the upper side of the leaf and 2 deep longitudinal furrows on the underside. The stem has linear leaves, is hairy with glands and has a dold-like inflorescence consisting of 2 to 6 large, white flowers . The petals have a length of up to 12 millimeters, 5 to 7 nerves, are obovate, and narrowed into doldrums. They are up to 3 times as long as the chalice .
Flowering time is from May to June.
The species has chromosome number 2n = 26.
Occurrence
The Tombea saxifrage is in the Judikarischen Alps , on the Monte Baldo and the Brenta endemic . The species occurs here from montane to alpine on steep limestone and dolomite rock walls at altitudes of 1000 to 2300 meters. The species is rare.
