Atterhäll, who last played for the Swedish club HK Aranäs and played for the Swedish men's national handball team, was mostly used on the left wing .

Tommy Atterhäll started playing handball at HP Warta. There he also made his debut in the Swedish first division. When his club was relegated in 2002, Atterhäll went to local rivals IK Sävehof . With the men from the Gothenburg suburb Partille , he won the Swedish championship in 2004 and 2005. In the last two years, however, Sävehof always had to admit defeat to the Stockholm club Hammarby IF HF in the fight for the championship ; In 2007 Atterhäll finally moved to Denmark to FCK Håndbold , with whom he won the Danish Championship in 2008 and the Danish Cup in 2010. In summer 2010 he joined the Swedish club HK Aranäs . Later he also worked as an assistant trainer for 4 years. After the 2016/17 season Atterhäll ended his active career at Aranäs and took over the coaching position from the Swedish club Önnereds HK . Under his leadership, Önnereds rose to the top Swedish league in 2018.

Tommy Atterhäll made six international appearances for the Swedish national team . For the 2007 men's handball world championship in Germany, he could not qualify with Sweden; at the European handball championship in Norway in 2008 he was only part of the extended squad of his country.
