Thomas "Tommy" Younger (born April 10, 1930 in Edinburgh , † January 13, 1984 ) was a Scottish football player on the position of goalkeeper .

Life

Club player

Younger began his professional career at his hometown club Hibernian Edinburgh , where he developed into a goalkeeper at an early age and was a great support for the successful team that won the last two championship titles in the club's history in the seasons 1950/51 and 1951/52. In addition, the Hibs narrowly missed two more championship titles in this era, when they were runner-up behind the Glasgow Rangers in 1949/50 with only one point behind and in 1952/53 only because of the poorer goal quotient (1.82 versus 2.05) .

In 1956 Younger moved to Liverpool , which was playing in the English second division at the time , for whom he made his debut on August 18, 1956 in a second division home game against Huddersfield Town (2: 3) and three years later, on April 25, 1959, played his last game at Swansea City (3: 3).

When Younger was ousted by the younger Bert Slater before the 1959/60 season , he moved to FC Falkirk as a player- coach . After a serious injury, he thought his active career was over and withdrew. However, when he found the injury wasn't as bad as originally thought, he returned to goal, this time receiving a contract with English club Stoke City . Soon after, he went to Welsh Rhyl FC and a short time later to the newly formed Canadian club Toronto City , before ending his active career with English club Leeds United .

National player

Between 1955 and 1958 Tommy Younger was the goalkeeper of the Scottish national team and played a total of 24 international matches. He made his debut on May 4, 1955 against Portugal (3-0) and his last appearance was on June 11, 1958 at the World Cup finals in 1958 against Paraguay (3-0).

Later activities

After his playing career, Younger returned to his former club, Hibernian FC, in October 1969 and was elected to the board, where he was most recently vice president. In May 1983 he was elected President of the Scottish Football Association . He held this post until his unexpectedly early death on January 13, 1984 at the age of only 53 years.
