Tong Island (also called Saint Rafael Island) is an island in the north of Papua New Guinea . It is part of the Manus Province .

geography

Tong is one of the Admiralty Islands . The island is located 50 km east of Manus , and 8 km east of Pak ; the island of Rambutyo is 20 km southwest. The densely forested island is of volcanic origin and reaches a height of 20 m. Tong is 6.5 km long and 3.5 km wide, the island is surrounded by coral reefs .

The Austronesian language Pak-Tong is spoken in Tong, which in 1977 had 970 speakers.

The ebony honeyeater (Myzomela pammelaena) is endemic to Tong.

history

The islands have probably been around since around 1500 BC. Inhabited by Melanesians . The area came under German administration in 1885 and belonged to German New Guinea since 1899 . In 1914 the islands were conquered by Australian troops, and after the First World War they were administered as a mandate of the League of Nations of Australia. The islands were occupied by Japan from 1942 to 1944 , but returned to Australian administration in 1949. Since 1975 they have been part of the independent state of Papua New Guinea.
