Toni Leutwiler (born October 31, 1923 in Zurich ; † March 18, 2009 in Zollikofen ), also known as Tom Wyler , was a Swiss musician, composer, arranger and conductor.

life and work

Toni Leutwiler attended the Conservatory in Zurich from 1936 to 1944 and received the teaching diploma for violin and piano at the age of 19 ½. At that time, jazz was still banned at the conservatory, but his jazz band played at the Konsiball . He began his musical career in 1944 as an orchestral violinist and soloist with the Musikkollegium Winterthur and the Kurtheater Baden. In 1945 he switched to the Bern Symphony Orchestra , the former city orchestra , as a violinist . He also worked for Radio Bern from 1946 to 1952 . The programs popular melodies in a new way with the string orchestra Toni Leutwiler and later Toni Leutwiler presenting his latest arrangements were like a hit parade back then. The first broadcast was on June 27, 1946. From 1952 to 1956 he had an engagement as chief conductor of the Orchester de la Suisse Romande under the title Grand Jazz Symphonique with composition and arrangement obligations. His compositions from that time City Rhapsodie and Bristol Cream as well as Lovely Day and Happy Time , which went around the world with the records by Frank Chacksfield and his Singing Strings , were international successes. From 1956 to 1975 he worked as a freelance composer, arranger and conductor of symphonic upscale light music .

Toni Leutwiler had great international success as a composer and as an arranger for soloists and orchestra. In the 1960s he was at the height of his professional career. Between 1945 and 1975 he composed and arranged around 2000 compositions and arrangements, mainly for symphonic light music, also inspired by the jazz that the American occupation forces brought to Europe at the time.

He was one of the pioneers for the entry of jazz into popular music in Europe. He managed to bridge the gap between classical symphonic music, jazz and folk music. He was one of the first composers and arrangers to experiment with reverb effects, playback, stereophony (first stereo recording on Swiss radio), double speed, 4-track recordings, special solo instruments, clapping, whistling, guitar and various percussions in radio orchestras from all over Europe.

His clients were over 45 large broadcasters in 22 countries, primarily the Südwestfunk (D) as well as advertising television and record companies. He wrote compositions and arrangements for various orchestras and performers, so u. a. a concert for piano, jazz and symphony orchestras, piano solos for pianist Willi Stech , violin music for concert violinist and romantic songs for tenor Fritz Wunderlich. Again and again he realized new ideas, topics, line-ups, rhythms and many experiments. He was one of the most played Swiss composers of upscale light music.

His compositions Glücksvogel , Am Lago Maggiore Suite , Summer Suite , Adelboden Suite , Der Träumer , Butterfly Dance , Psychology in Major and Minor , La Gioconda , Engadiner Schlittenpartie and the Zürcher Spatzen (first recording in stereophony by the Beromünster Radio Orchestra) achieved great success and some are still performed today. His compositions Engadine sleigh ride , Just kidding , Bella Campagna , Madonna del Sasso , Night in Cape Down , butterfly dance , summer , and always cheerful and arrangements The flower of Hawaii and Kiss me Kate were used in television productions. The compositions Alt Bern , Lively Weekend , City Rhapsodie , Petit air un peu faux and Psychologie in major and minor were used as film melodies.

From 1975 to 1988 he was director and teacher at the home organ school of the piano construction company Schmidt-Flohr AG in Bern and teacher for the electric organ. During this time he worked on around 300 works for his 50 organ students. More than 100,000 music books were printed and sold by publishers in Switzerland and Germany.

Toni Leutwiler was married to Angelina Leutwiler-Maroggi from 1945 until his death. The marriage produced five sons. Angelina Leutwiler-Maroggi died on April 2, 2013.
