The Cassoidea are a superfamily of marine snails that live in shallow subtropical and tropical seas. The superfamily also includes the largest snails, which have a shell up to 40 cm high.

features

The casings are right-handed and varied. They are usually large to very large (up to 40 cm high). The last passage is often greatly enlarged and can still be closed with a lid. The lower edge is usually drawn out into a long siphon channel. The shell is relatively thick. The animals have a long trunk that can be extended and retracted.

Way of life

The representatives of the superfamily Cassoidea are widespread in the tropical and subtropical seas. They are usually found there on soft substrates and live predatory on echinoderms (Echinodermata) such as sea cucumbers , brittle stars , starfish and sea urchins as well as other mollusks (Mollusca).

Systematics

Most authors regard the Cassidae and Tonnidae as groups in the family rank. Only Bouchet and Rocroi do not recognize the Cassidae as a family, but place them as a subfamily in the family Tonnidae and this in turn in a superfamily Tonnoidea. This is not correct under the International Rules for Zoological Nomenclature . The family name Cassidae / Cassoidea is older than the family name Tonnidae / Tonnoidea, and therefore the correct name of the superfamily is Cassoidea (see also Millard (1997) and Riedel (2000)).
