Tony Archer

Anthony John "Tony" Archer (born July 14, 1938 in Dulwich , London ) is a British jazz musician ( double bass ).

Live and act

Archer learned the cello as a schoolboy before switching to bass when he was 16. After starting with Phil Kinorra, he played with him in the trio of John Burch in 1959 in American soldiers' clubs on the continent. In 1961 he joined this rhythm section and Graham Bond joined Don Rendell's band , with whom he recorded in the same year ( Roarin ' ). Then he worked at Stu Hamer , Harold McNair , Gus Galbraight, Bobby Wellins , Peter King . and Roy Budd . From the late 1960s he was part of Tony Lee's trio , with whom he also appeared in Peter Sellers ' feature film The Magic Christian (1969). In the 1970s he played in the groups of Brian Lemon , Sandy Brown , and for a short time with John Dankworth and Humphrey Lyttelton . From the middle of the decade he accompanied traveling stars such as Joe Pass and Carmen McRae with Tony Lee 's trio at Ronnie Scott's Jazz Club . Jack Parnell , Kenny Baker and Don Lusher then brought him into their band Best of British Jazz . He also worked with Dick Morrissey , only to appear again in a trio with Lee. He can also be heard on albums by Phil Seamen and Eddie Thompson .
