Fata Tony Fautua (* in Auckland , New Zealand ) is a New Zealand diplomat. He was the first New Zealand diplomat of Samoan descent to hold the post of ambassador.

Career

Fautua grew up in the Auckland district of Otahuhu . He received a Bachelor of Arts and Master of Commerce (Hons) from the University of Canterbury in New Zealand .

Fautua has worked for the New Zealand Ministry of Foreign Affairs since 1994. Among other things, he was entrusted with the peace process in Bougainville ( Papua New Guinea ) and represented New Zealand at the Asia-Pacific Economic Community (APEC) as Deputy Senior Official. He has also served at the New Zealand Embassy in Washington, DC, and New Zealand's diplomatic missions in Bougainville (as special envoy), Niue (as deputy high commissioner ) and New York (as first secretary of the New Zealand Permanent Mission to the United Nations ).

In 2011 Fautua was appointed Ambassador of New Zealand to East Timor by Foreign Secretary Murray McCully . He held the office until 2014. During Fautua's term of office, the last UN mission in East Timor will end. New Zealand soldiers were also involved in UNMIT . After that, Fautua was New Zealand's High Commissioner in Papua New Guinea from April 2014 to 2017.

Fautua is the son of Alofivae (from Lanu , Savaiʻi ) and Litia (from Afega , Upolu ). Fautua inherited the chief title Fata from his mother's family . Tony Fautua has a son with his wife Ina.
