The Tonzona River is the left headwaters of the East Fork Kuskokwim River in Alaska (USA).
The Tonzona River rises at an altitude of about 1200 m in the Alaska range . The headwaters are located east of the 874 m high Mystic Pass . The Tonzona River initially flows northeast through the mountains. The meltwater of the Surprise Glacier and the glacier-fed mountain rivers Ripsnorter Creek and Cathedral Creek flow into the Tonzona River on the right. This turns to the northwest and leaves the mountains. It flows through the Kuskokwim Tanana Plain in a north-westerly direction. It flows south past the Slow Fork Hills . After 120 km, the Tonzona River meets the Slow Fork , which flows in from the north. The two rivers form a network of several river arms, which ultimately unite to form the East Fork Kuskokwim River.
The Native American river name Tonzona was originally used for a tributary of the South Fork Kuskokwim River that ran further south . This was later renamed Little Tonzona River .
