Toomas Trass

Toomas Trass (born December 12, 1966 in Tartu ) is an Estonian composer and organist .

Life

Toomas Trass was born in Tartu in southern Estonia as the son of the biologist Hans Trass (* 1928) and the actress Raine Loo. He graduated from Tallinn Music High School ( Tallinna Muusikakeskkool ) in 1986 . In 1992 he completed his composition studies at the Estonian Academy of Music with Lepo Sumera . In addition, he studied the organ with Hugo Lepnurm . His secondary teacher in Tallinn was Jaan Rääts . In addition, Trass attended masterclasses with Josef Sluys in Belgium and José Luis González Uriol in Spain and continued training with Ludger Lohmann and Jacques van Oortmerssen in the Netherlands.

Since 1993 Trass has been teaching church and organ music at the Estonian Music and Theater Academy in the Estonian capital Tallinn . Since 2008 he has also worked as a church organist in the Tallinn district of Nõmme . He has performed at numerous organ concerts in Estonia and abroad. Trass' recordings of the works of the Georgian composer Otar Taktakishvili (1924–1989) are also known.

Toomas Trass has presented numerous compositions of his own, including the animated film opera Die Sprotte im Sonnenschein (1993, director: Mati Kütt ), the oratorio Passion of St. Luke (1997), the Advent cantata Immanuel (1997), Ohio Mass for solo -Singer, mixed choir, string quartet and organ (1998) and his concerto for chamber orchestra (1998).

Toomas Trass has been a member of the Estonian Composers' Association ( Eesti Heliloojate Liit ) since 2004 .

Awards

In 1999 Trass was awarded the Heino Eller Prize for young composers.
