Hugo Lepnurm
Hugo Lepnurm (born October 31, 1914 in Tsitre, today Kuusalu rural community , Harju County , Estonia ; † February 15, 1999 in Tallinn ) was an Estonian composer and organist .
life and work
Hugo Lepnurm was born in the village of Tsitre (German Zitter ) in what was then Kolga ( Kolk ) in Northern Estonia. Lepnurm closed 1933 degree in organ at the Tallinn Conservatory (now Music and Theater Academy ) in Artur Kapp from. From 1932 to 1934 he also studied composition .
Lepnurm spent 1938/39 in Paris with the French composers Joseph Gilles and Marcel Dupré . From 1936 to 1942 Lepnurm was a teacher at the Tallinn Conservatory, from 1944 to 1950 at the Tallinn State Conservatory. From 1945 he held the title of professor. Lepnurm mainly taught the subjects organ, music theory and music history. He also taught at the Theological Institute of the Estonian Evangelical Lutheran Church . This displeased the Soviet rulers in Estonia, who in 1950 banned him from teaching at the conservatory. Only after the de-Stalinization was he given his teaching license again in 1958. From 1967 to 1994 Lepnurm taught at the Estonian Academy of Music (EMA).
From 1933 Lepnurm appeared as a soloist in numerous organ concerts in Estonia and abroad. He also wrote several books on the history of organ building and organ culture. He was considered an expert in early music . During the Second World War he also began to compose himself. His three cantatas , an organ (1956) and a piano concerto, pieces for choir and organ and his sonata for cello and organ are well known. In 1974 Lepnurm received the title of People's Artist of the Estonian Soviet Socialist Republic .
