The Toppenish National Wildlife Refuge a is a National Wildlife Refuge in the Yakama Indian Reservation , about 6 mi (10 km) south of Toppenish in the intensely agricultural Yakima Valley in the east of the US state Washington . The closest location is Sunnyside . By using the water from Toppenish and Snake Creek and with the support of summer irrigation , the administration is able to maintain a mosaic of protected wetlands , alluvial forests and natural plateaus.
The nutrient-rich wetland habitats attract thousands of wintering waterfowl. In summer they provide breeding opportunities for a number of wetland-dependent birds, mammals and plants. As its course meanders through the sanctuary, Toppenish Creek plays a significant role as one of the last remaining streams in which the Columbia River steelhead trout breed in sufficient numbers.
The Toppenish National Wildlife Refuge is a place where spectacular gatherings of water birds can be seen; it also offers opportunities for hunting , nature photography and environmental education.
