The McNary National Wildlife Refuge a is a National Wildlife Refuge administered by the United States Fish and Wildlife Service . It extends on the east bank of the Columbia River in southeast Washington state from the mouth of the Snake River to the mouth of the Walla Walla River and downstream into Oregon . The sanctuary is in rural Burbank , but very close to the rapidly developing Tri-Cities ( Kennewick , Pasco, and Richland ), with Pasco being the closest. In fact, the definition of an “urban nature reserve” applies to the protected area. In a few areas of North America , numerous populations of water birds can be observed in this way. Visitors love the spectacular gatherings of Canada geese , mallards and other water birds. More than half of the mallards migrating in the Pacific region of North America overwinter at any given time in this part of the Columbia River basin .

The protected area includes oxbow lakes , shrub steppes , irrigated agricultural areas, river islands, river delta mudflats and alluvial forests . The sanctuary, which is particularly important for Canada geese, mallards and other swimming ducks as well as for waders , also includes wetlands and bays, which are important as spawning grounds for king salmon . Other water birds that use the reserve Carolina teals , shoveler , giant Pochard , Ring-necked ducks and violets ducks . Other bird species to be observed here are u. a. Bald eagles and peregrine falcons and thousands of colony breeders who use the river islands as safe nesting sites.
