Tor Harald Carpelan (born December 18, 1867 in Uskela , † March 9, 1960 in Helsinki ) was a Finnish historian , biographer and genealogist .

Life

Tor Carpelan was a member of a Finnish noble family . His parents were Otto Maximilian Carpelan (1822-1891) and Aurora Louisa Wasenius (1836-1920).

He studied at the University of Helsinki until 1889 and made his camera exam in 1892. He began his career as a curator at the University of Helsinki and was employed there as a secretary from 1902 to 1935. In the years 1923–1952 he was also a genealogist of the Finnish knight house. In 1936 he was awarded an honorary doctorate from the University of Helsinki.

Carpelan was married twice. His first marriage was with Ester Kynberg (1874–1904). After she died in childbed , he went into a second marriage with Anna Emilia Edgren (1883-1966). Three children were born from the second marriage, including the brothers Gregor and Henrik Carpelan (1921–2000). The latter became a psychiatrist and psychoanalyst.
