Derek Harper (born October 13, 1961 in Royston , Georgia ) is a retired American basketball player who ended his active career in the NBA in 1999 .
Career
High school & college
Derek Harper attended the "Roosevelt Junior High School" in his youth and then the "North Shore High School" in his hometown of West Palm Beach . After successfully completing his degree, he studied for three years at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (UIUC), where he played the "Fighting straight" on the university's basketball team. Because of his achievements, he was elected to the “First-Team All-Big Ten” and the “Second-Team All-American” in his last season in 1983 .
NBA
Harper was drafted in the 1983 NBA draft as the 11th pick in the 1st round by the Dallas Mavericks . With this team he then spent the first decade of his sixteen seasons NBA career and formed the backcourt of the Mavs during this time with his teammate, the shooting guard Rolando Blackman . In the 1993/94 season traded the Mavericks Derek Harper for Tony Campbell and a future 1st round draft pick to the New York Knicks , where he replaced the starting point guard Doc Rivers for the Knicks , who due to injuries for the season failed. With this change, Harper managed to make a career jump overnight, because he switched from the Mavs, which were below average at the time, to the season’s title candidate, the Knicks. He mastered the task set for him, while maintaining his good performance, whereby he managed to lead the Knicks, together with the front court , consisting of center Patrick Ewing and power forward Charles Oakley , to two runners-up in 1994 and 1995.
In 1996, after fulfilling his contract, Harper was released from the Knicks and signed as a free agent with his old team, the Dallas Mavericks, where he spent a season. The Mavericks traded him and his teammate Ed O'Bannon for Dennis Scott to the Orlando Magic . In 1999 he signed as a free agent with the Los Angeles Lakers , where he was only able to play 45 season games due to injuries and was used as a bench player. After the Lakers wanted to trade Harper to the Detroit Pistons , he ended his professional career.
In his NBA career, Derek Harper completed 1,199 games and achieved 16,006 points, 6,577 assists and 1,957 steals. Despite his consistently good performances and high scores in the NBA statistics, he never played in an NBA All-Star Game .
In October 2013, the club owner of the Dallas Mavericks, Mark Cuban, announced that he wanted to withdraw Derek Harper's jersey number 12 during the 2013/14 season , followed by the denial for this season in March 2014 .
