The Torfbahn Otworskoje ( Russian Узкоколейная железная дорога Отворского торфопредприятия , transkr. Uskokoleinaja schelesnaja doroga Otworskowo torfopredpijatija , transl. Uzkokolejnaâ železnaâ doroga Otvorskogo torfopredpriâtiâ ) is a narrow-gauge railway to the village Swetly (Bahnbetriebswerk Пихтовая) in Rajon Kotelnich in Kirov Oblast in Russia .

history

The 32 km long peat railway was put into operation in 1964. It was operated by the non-public joint-stock company Vyatka- Peat (ЗАО "ВяткаТорф"). The narrow-gauge railway has a track width of 750 mm and was mainly used for peat transport and the transportation of workers. Peat mining began on a large scale in 1968.

At the Перегрузочная transfer station, the peat was transferred to broad-gauge wagons on the Nizhny Novgorod (Gorky) - Kotelnitsch railway line with a track width of 1520 mm (4 feet 11 27⁄32 inches ) and taken to a combined heat and power plant in Kirov .

At first there was passenger traffic. In 1999 there were 5 passenger trains per day with two or three cars each. Passenger traffic was discontinued in spring 2003, whereupon three times the fare was charged for bus journeys than for rail travel.

The transfer of peat to broad gauge wagons was discontinued in 2004. After that, the narrow-gauge railway was operated over a length of 4 km to transport peat for heating. Repairs were carried out in places and new sleepers were laid.
