Torgrim from Ljones

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Torgrim von Ljones (* 12th century; † 1206 ) was a Norwegian Sysselmann and military leader during the wars between Baglers and Birkebeinern .

family

His parents are unknown. He came from Strandebarm Farm in Kvam Commune in Hardanger . On April 21, 1206 he married Sigrid Bårdsdatter, daughter of the feudal man Bård Guttormsson . Since their date of birth is not known, it is not clear which of the three women of Bård was her mother. Assuming a marriage age of 20 years or younger, Ragnfrid Erlingsdatter is most likely.

Civil war

He was Sysselmann and general of the Birkebeiner from 1202 to 1206. He was one of the closest advisors to the kings Håkon Sverreson and Inge Bårdsson . His role during this period can be found in the Bøglunga sögur.

King Håkon traveled to Bergen after taking over the rule in 1202 . There he learned that the baglers were inland and wanted to move to Rogaland or Trondheim . Then Torgrim and other military leaders were sent south. They met the army of Baglers at Rott off Tananger on Jæren . Torgrim and the Birkebeiner won and the Bagler army broke up. Two years later, the Baglers gathered an army again. Torgimm was given the task of defending Bergen and Vestlandet. When the baglers came to Bergen, Torgrim had holed up with other commanders and 200 men in Sverresborg . After several unsuccessful attempts by the Baglers to take the fortress, they withdrew because they feared that the Birkebeiner would soon receive reinforcements. As a reward for his commitment, he received Sigrid, King Inges' half-sister, for marriage. The wedding took place on April 21, 1206 in Nidaros. During the wedding feast, Torgrim received word that the baglers were advancing towards the city. King Inge wanted to break off the party, but Torgrim persuaded him to continue the party and promised to take care of the guards. But the guards became inattentive. The baglers attacked the city when most of the Birkebeiners were asleep. Many of his men were slain and he was seriously injured. The king, who the baglers suspected to be in the royal court, slept with his girlfriend and was only able to save himself wearing underpants. First he tried to get on a ship, which failed. So he swam to the other bank of the river, where he was rescued, exhausted and hypothermic. This is the last news about him from the Bøglunga sögur. The Icelandic Annales regii and the Skálholts annálar to 1206 report that Torgrim killed the Birkebeiner Jon usta during the fight and was killed for it. What the conflict was between the two cannot be determined.

Sigrid later married Jon Sigurdsson von Austrått.
