Torn (song)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Torn is a 1995 song by Ednaswap , written and produced by Scott Cutler, Anne Preven and Phil Thornalley, and featured on the Ednaswap album . It only became globally successful in 1997 thanks to Natalie Imbruglia .

history

In 1993 the producer and musician Phil Thornalley (occasionally bassist for the band The Cure ), Anne Preven and Scott Cutler wrote the song. Preven and Cutler saw it for their nascent band Ednaswap , on their self-titled debut album in 1993, and also on their EP Chicken the following year , but both without commercial success. Cutler had previously sent the song to EMI employee Poul Bruun, who selected it for Lis Sørensen's album Under stjernerne et sted (1993), on which it came out in Danish translation ( Brændt ) and became a local radio hit. Bruun and Thornalley later worked with the Norwegian singer Trine Rein , whose version of Torn brought her the breakthrough in Denmark in 1996 and was also played on the radio in other European and Asian countries.

In the lyrics of the song, the protagonist is disappointed in her lover after his character has changed significantly.

In 1997 Natalie Imbruglia covered Torn on her album Left of the Middle , it was released on October 27, 1997 before the album and is one of the few titles published by Imbruglia in which she was not involved as a songwriter.

The cover of the music genre Pop-Rock , which is very similar to Rein's version and again produced by Thornalley, made the song known worldwide. It became a number 1 hit in Denmark, Belgium, Canada, Spain and Sweden. It reached number two on the charts and platinum status in the UK and Australia. In the year of its appearance, Torn was the most played song on British radio, in Australia it remained for the next twenty years. In the United States, RCA did not release the song as a single to promote sales of the album, but it was # 1 on the US Billboard Radio Play Charts for 14 weeks. Torn remained Imbruglia's best-known song and was so successful that it is often referred to as a " one-hit wonder " despite having sold more than 10 million albums in total.

The music video was directed by Alison Maclean and shot on October 25, 1997. A home furnishing serves as a backdrop and the viewing angle of the camera is unchanged. The main roles in the video are played by Natalie Imbruglia and Jeremy Sheffield , who walk around the backdrop, cuddle, argue and also fool around. Some of them are made up by the film crew. Shortly before the end of the video, the backdrops are dismantled.

At MTV8 it was honored as the second best video of all time .
