Torneo de los Barrios

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Torneo de los Barrios ( Spanish for neighborhood tournament ) was an amateur sports competition in Mexico City , organized and sponsored by the Mexican daily El Heraldo de México . It included a boxing and soccer tournament that took place during the 1970s and 1980s and stalled in the early 1990s.

history

The Aztec Stadium hosted the final and third place match.

The tournament was held for the first time in 1973 and was open to all interested amateur athletes and teams from all delegaciones in the capital. The final round matches were played on the sports grounds of Ciudad Deportiva Magdalena Mixhuca . The final and the match for third place took place in the Aztec Stadium .

In 1976, the youth teams of the big capital city clubs CD Cruz Azul and Club América faced each other in a "small" Clásico Joven , in which the Cruz Azul team won 2-1. Third place went to a real amateur team called Zacamel .

For amateur athletes, the tournament not only served as a sporting competition with the neighborhood against the other districts, but also as an opportunity to be discovered by talent scouts for a professional career. For example, the later national player Cristóbal Ortega was discovered at an early edition of this competition by talent scouts from Club America , who provided him with a professional contract in 1974 and with which he spent his entire career (until 1991). The future national coach Miguel Herrera was also discovered during such a tournament.

But the main purpose of the tournament was to promote the neighborhood and the sporting competition on an amateur basis. It met with a great response from the people and relatives, friends and neighbors of the players came to support them. It didn't take long for the tournament to catch on in other parts of the country. For example, near the border with the United States, the daily newspaper La Voz de la Frontera ( The voice of the border ) is holding a competition called Torneo de los Barrios de la Voz de la Frontera .

In the capital, too, they are eager to revive the tournament. For example, the daily El Heraldo de México , which was also responsible for the traditional tournament, organized a competition called Futbol 7 for 2018 , in which all amateur footballers between the ages of 18 and 25 from the capital could take part .
