The Torre Belvedere is a 24-meter-high observation tower above Maloja in the Swiss canton of Graubünden . The tower houses a Pro Natura nature center with various exhibitions.

history

From 1882 the Belgian Count Camille de Renesse had the private residence at Belvedere Palace built on the rock that separates the Upper Engadine from the Bergell . Due to financial difficulties, however, the construction project remained unfinished. The painter Giovanni Segantini not only wanted to complete the work, but also to build a medieval palace. But he never got around to it because he died of appendicitis in 1899. The castle was used as a hotel and later as an educational institute. After a fire, most of the tower extensions had to be removed.

In 1953 the nature conservation organization Pro Natura acquired the tower together with the surrounding mountain pine forest and the glacier pots and set up a nature reserve.

building

The tower made of stone is 24 meters high. 112 steps lead to the viewing platform at a height of 22.5 meters. This offers a view of the Upper Engadine and Bergell. The exhibitions of the nature center and other organizers are shown on the three floors inside the tower.
