The Torre de Llebeig is a watchtower from the late 16th century on the municipality of Andratx belonging Balearic island Dragonera .

history

In the 16th century, defense towers began to protect the coast of Mallorca against attacks from the sea. The watchtower Talaia de na Guinavera was built on the offshore island of Sa Dragonera to the west in 1580 . Despite its exposed location on the 353 m high Puig de na Pòpia, it had a weak point: From it one could not see the Cala de Llebeig in the southeast of Sa Dragonera, which is suitable for a boat landing. Therefore, the Torre de Llebeig was built in 1585 to secure it. The tower withstood a pirate attack in 1685, but the cistern system outside was destroyed.

After the tower lost its military importance in the 19th century, it fell into disrepair, but was reconstructed in 2004 for € 62,000. The cost of transporting the building material by sea and air alone amounted to € 14,500. On the basis of historical building plans, a hole in the outer wall was closed, the roof was renewed and the stairs and doors inside were restored. The then president of the Mallorca Island Council, Maria Antònia Munar i Riutort , personally convinced herself of the progress of the construction work.

description

The tower stands on a 60 m high cliff above the Cala de Llebeig within sight of the Torre de la Mola near Port d'Andratx, 7 kilometers away . The cylindrical tower with a circular floor plan has an outer diameter of 7 meters and a height of more than 9 meters. It is built with large joints from rubble stones and plastered. Inside there are two superimposed rooms. The rectangular entrance, which is nowadays reached via an iron ladder, leads to the top of the two at a height of six meters. Above it are the remains of a machiculus . The room has three small windows on its land side. A ladder and stone stairs lead to the roof platform, on which there is a cannon with a gun carriage . Next to the tower there is a rainwater collection system made up of several ceramic basins sunk into the ground and connected with pipes.

The Torre de Llebeig has been a listed building since 1949 . It is registered in the Spanish Cultural Property Database ( Bienes de Interés Cultural ) under number RI-51-0008335.
